The Hoops for Hope event was a joint function put together by Detroit Is My Home (DIMH) and Tawheed Center, a local mosque located in Farmington Hills, Michigan. The event consisted of a two-night long basketball tournament in which 40+ young men ranging from high school to college participated in. Part of the event included a mandatory volunteering service opportunity for all players involved. DIMH worked with Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries (DRMM) to allow the players from the tournament to bring and serve lunch at two different DRMM shelters in Detroit. We received overwhelmingly positive feedback not only from the residents at the shelter, but also from the volunteers who enjoyed giving back and exclaimed they would want to do more similar activities! We hope that through initiatives such as Hoops for Hope, we can raise awareness about homelessness and unite communities to come together to help those in need and work towards a solution.
